why is my koi pond water green?

My pond is brand new, only been running now for 3 weeks or so. i have a 3100 GPH pump with bio filter, also have an 18 watt UV light. all brand new. my pond water is turning green. algae growing on stones and also looks to be green water. I treated with algae fix last night. my pond is stone bottom on liner approx 1300 gallons. what can i do? i cannot believe it turned so green in such a short amount of time. all answers and input will be greatly appreciated.

i understand it probably is an algae bloom, but i thought the UV lights were suppose to help with this? will Microbe-lift help?

Algae growth is usually caused by too much lighting. Not sure how long you have the lights on, but I would try to limit the lighting to no more than 8 hrs per day-

UV clarifiers can’t keep up with a bloom. You need…

Shade – most experts agree that you need 45% coverage (or more) with floaters or shade.

Nitrates – a lot of nutrients will cause it – that’s uneaten food, etc.

The only quick fix – 50% water change and shade. It’s not harmful to the fish – but it looks awful.

I had a bloom in my 8000 gallon pond. Did a 3000 gallon change followed by a 2000 gallon change a week later. That gave my clarifier the edge it needed.

its the amount of sunlight that goes into the pond that makes the algae grow faster try to put a cover over the pond that’s what i did to mine and it helped me good luck
